Head designer at Clarks Originals, Marijke Bruggink has been the heart and soul of the collections for the past 6 years. With an impressive background in shoe and product design and a deep passion for original music, Marijke instils her design philosophy and knowledge of Clarks heritage into the authentic collections you see every season. Always working in the tradition of our iconic shoes: the Desert Boot, Wallabee, Natalie, Desert Trek and Lugger, the Originals DNA is carried forward into beautiful, simple shoes, made with honest construction. “Don’t follow trend but follow form… be confident, refer to the iconic heritage products but make something new. Honest. Pure. Timeless. Ageless. It’s like a good song that you will always play again because you love it.”

Growing up in a small village in Holland, Marijke found saviour and inspiration in music through vinyl records, reminiscing back to her school days she remembers: “Blondie, she saved my life: her style, her music, it opened my eyes to doing it all for yourself! All good things come from this energy = rock and roll…”
As a big music fan and record collector, Marijke has always held vinyl dear. Everything about vinyl culture; searching for classic albums, discovering new genres, the collectable graphics on every sleeve, has informed her style and creative work over years of collecting.

“At Clarks Originals we endeavour to support music initiatives: from working with Strummerville and Trojan Records, to helping emerging talent and bands. We think Record Store Day is a fantastic initiative. To celebrate and support  Record Store Day we used our most iconic shoe, the Desert Boot, to make a range of special editions, linked to vinyl records.”
